TA he trifecta nature of nursing (practice, education, and research) can be illustrated by a three-legged chair: all are functionally independent but intricately related. Without the three working concomitantly, the chair cannot stand on its own. Applying this concept in nursing, research, education, and practice represents the three legs of the discipline. Research advances practice but it is practice that informs research, whereas education is essential to good practice and research. Almost always, research and education belong to academia while performance of nursing clinical practice occurs in hospitals and clinics. It is paramount, therefore, that in order to promote the advancement of the nursing discipline as a whole, nurses in academia and practice must strive for continuing collaboration and seek to establish a more perfect union.
