In New Zealand you could argue that blue should be the official Christmas colour; it is, after all, the time when blue skies abound and agapanthus and hydrangeas reach their glorious peak. However, it's red that still rules the roost as the iconic holiday hue (with perhaps a little green and white thrown in for good measure). In the time of Christ, red was associated with riches, power and royalty. It was also a reminder of the shed blood and suffering of the children Herod had slaughtered in the weeks after the nativity, but red has different meanings around the globe.
