A key issue for FRP (fiber-reinforced plastics) structures in infrastructure application is durability. In carbon fiber-vinyl ester composites, a residual stress develops during the thermal cure due to shrinkage of the resin matrix. A balance must be struck between adhesion of the fiber to the bulk matrix to ensure transfer of load, while trying to reduce the residual stress that builds up because the fiber and matrix are adhered together as the matrix tries to shrink. Researchers have examined the interphase region and devised a method to improve fiber-matrix adhesion and the physical properties of the interphase. Treating the fibers with PHE-based sizings provides greater debonding and fatigue performance.
