In the wake of the recent demise of Mapping Science resulting from litigation by LizardTech, Earth Resource Mapping (ERM) has reaffirmed its commitment to open standards and JPEG 2000 in particular Open Standards provide flexibility and investment protection. The demise of Mapping Science has left a void in the promotion of open standards in GIS imagery that ERM intends to fill. Stuart Nixon, chief executive and founder of Earth Resource Mapping said Mapping Science was an advocate of open standards in GIS imagery. "The loss of this independent vendor will be felt in the geospatial community," he said. "Mapping Science was an ambassador for the use of JPEG 2000. With Mapping Science gone, it means that ERM has an even greater responsibility in taking JPEG 2000 to the market place as part of our total imagery solutions."
