This special issue offers a suite of papers presented at the Third International Symposium on Biological and Environmental Chemistry of DMS(P) and Related Compounds. Over 50 scientists from eight countries attended the three-day symposium. All major institutes active in this research field were represented, and the papers and posters covered most aspects of the current research effort. The articles present recent findings on the biological production of the volatile sulfur compound dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its roles 1) in the regulation of global climate and 2) in algal physiology and food web processes. In addition to the articles, the reader will find three perspective papers providing, to both experts and nonexperts alike, a stimulating overview of this expanding multidisciplinary research field.
