Information Literacy (IL) is a term which receives a good deal of attention and discussion. There is no doubt that IL is a key life skill these days, and this is not least the case in the field of academic research and study. Is sufficient time allocated to formal study of IL skills, and what are the potential benefits of a substantial course programme devoted to the topic? How can IL levels be assessed? The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has recently witnessed a restructuringof the support offered to PhD students at the Library and the Centre for Learning Technology (CLT). A piece of research by Jane Seeker of the CLT and Rowena Macrae-Gibson of the City University Library in London, UK, looked at the course "Information Literacy - tools for research" also known as Course MI512.
