Graphic fish-farming footage on the Seven Network's Today Tonight caused a stir and sent fear into the hearts of Australian seafood consumers. But some suggest it all smells a bit fishy.Foodservice operators and chefs shouldn't be concerned about the hygiene standards of seafood imported from Asia, according to Seafood Importers Association of Australia president, Hany Peters. During February Channel 7's Today Tonight aired shocking images of fish farming in Vietnam, in a story titled 'Murky Mekong River', which Peters described as a "blatant sham". "The report was deliberately misleading in its inexpert opinion of water quality and fish farming conditions in the Mekong River". Peterssaid the deception was augmented by footage of heavily populated waterways in urban areas and disgusting conditions in some abandoned ponds and very small-scale river pens where fish are grown for local consumption.
