摘要

As a graduate student (or enthusiastic undergraduate), there comes a time when you start to think about how best to become involved in the professional realm of your field. Many students begin by becoming a member of an organization, such as the American Fisheries Society, and later attend meetings at local and parent Society levels. I found from personal experience that it was at this "meeting" stage when I started to think "I should figure out how to become more involved." I began filling out travel grants to request financial help attending these meetings, and I noticed that on almost all applications there was a section for professional/society involvement. This led me to believe that if I had something to put into this space, my chances of obtaining the travel grant would improve...and that's probably right! Hence the decision to become more involved in AFS. But then the question became: how and where do I get more involved in such a large organization?
