The Government and the Welsh Assembly were said this week to be failing to ensure that children at primary schools were getting healthy food. More money, in fact, was being spent on prison food than primary school lunches. According to two Soil Association reports the daily amount being spent on each child's school lunch could be as low as 31p, compared with around 60p being spent on a prisoner's lunch. As a result, low quality processed food - such as breaded fish chicken shapes - dominated schoolmeals which were also often high in fat, sugar and salt.
