If you look at the product, I don't do things hugely differently to many other people -for example, superficially it's structurally quite similar to the vegetation that some practitioners in Germany produce. What makes my work increasingly different,though, is that it is grounded in a very intimate understanding of and familiarity with the plants used in their natural habitats. I see myself as the equivalent of 19th century plant collectors - not collecting plant materials, but collecting an understanding of plant communities and their visual attributes so I can feed that into creating things which are very different to those that other people create. A second way in which my work differs from that of others is that my vegetation is very much grounded in an extensive process of testing and experimentation. I create design stereotype hypotheses and then I test them, to understand how they perform, over at least a five-to-10-year period - and that's pretty much unique, I think.
