The clustering of central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia, known as metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome, Syndrome X, or Reavan's syndrome, is associated with a substantially increased cardiovascular risk (Alberti et al. 2005). Although environmental triggers such as sedentary lifestyle and diet are accepted as important contributors, a strong genetic basis for the syndrome and its components is clearly supported by prospective twin studies (Kettunen et al. 2012), familial segregation (Ma et al. 2008), and heredity studies (Kraja et al 2011; Vattikuti et al. 2012).
