LAST ISSUE, we boldly predicted the "inevitability" of a new structural pine grading system in Australia sometime in 2007. But subsequent reaction indicates much stronger polarisation of opinion than first thought. So much so that the Australian Plantation Products and Paper Industry Council (A3P) is talking about a meeting of solid wood processors to 'hammer out' the issue. "SP grades should be left where they are now - on the shelf as a failed and expensive example of industry self-regulation gonewrong," says Andrew Jakab, chief operations officer of Auspine, one of Australia's biggest suppliers of construction timber.
