The 'El Nino' impact we discussed in this column in December 2015 issue was felt by the plantations in the Nilgiris, the largest tea growing district in the South, in January. Late mist and frost caused concerns to the planters. Production slowed butplanters claimed sharp improve-ment in quality. Even as such weather changes were enga-ging the attention of planters, it was refreshing to see that a new chapter in voluntary health welfare for plantation workers in the Nilgiris was opened on Saturday with Avataa Beve-rages throwing open free treatment for restoring hearing to the deaf.
