In March 1992, 20 randomly-selected households each from 2 rural and 2 urban areas in Nadia district, West Bengal, India, were classified according to per capita monthly expenditure; per capita daily protein and energy intakes from 10 types of foodwere calculated for each monthly expenditure group. Overall per capita daily protein intake for rural and urban groups respectively was 67.87 and 72.96 g, of which 5.94 and 7.37% was from milk and 0.62 and 2.90% from milk products; major sources of protein were cereals (59.29 and 64.24%) and fish (10.08 and 11.69%). Total protein intake, and protein intake from milk, milk products and fish tended to increase as level of monthly expenditure increased. The per capita daily energy intake in rural and urbanareas respectively was 2884.71 and 2720.05 Kcal of which 2.83 and 4.02% was from milk, 1.11 and 4.71% from milk products, 1.31 and 1.72% from fish and 74.48 and 61.40% from cereals. From a comparison of milk and fish as a source of animal protein in this area, it is concluded that fish is the more important and is also a much cheaper protein source than milk.
