SUMMER cropping on Western Australia's south coast could double graingrower cropping capacity, while cutting groundwater recharge. Following the final season of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported Warm Season Cropping Systems project; analyses of species production and water use have demonstrated a win-win solution for growers. In areas where significant summer rainfall can escape into the water table to draw saline water up the soil profile, warm season crops may be used as soaks to utilise that rainfall and limit recharge the following winter.
