The beef industry in the Maritimes has been through some rough patches in thepastdecade,butthings are finally beginningtolookupforthosewhohave soldiered through. Beginning with the BSE crisis in 2003, beef has been on a downward spiral all across Canada. With overseas markets closed and prices hitting rock bottom, farmers struggled for years just to make ends meet. But now there is a glimmer of hope that once again, people may be able to make a living on the farm. In the past few years, the nationalherd has declined in population and several important markets have re-opened to Canadian beef, meaning the price of beef has begun to climb again. But are Canadian beef farmers ready to take full advantage of these new markets and promote beef to new heights? At the moment there does not seem to be a strategy to increase local or global consumption of Canadian beef, and this is something that needs to be rectified.
