DEWA Issues a Tender for Studies of a Coal-Fired Power Station Project

In a bid to diversify the emirate of Dubai's sources of energy supply, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has issued a tender for the conduct of a study on plans for developing a coal-fired power station. The project is designated the "Dubai First Coal-Application in Power Generation". The Deputy Chairman of the emirate's Supreme Council for Energy, Mr. Saeed al-Tayer, who is also Chief Executive Officer of DEWA, explained that Dubai considered it important, so as not to be dependent on a single energy source in the shape of natural gas, saying: "It is an orientation towards clean coal." Mr. al-Tayer added that ultra-modern coal-fired power stations could cover 20% of Dubai's energy needs, while a further 20% could come from nuclear energy. However, he did not indicate whether Dubai would seek to develop nuclear power stations itself or whether it would import nuclear-generated electricity from plants to be built in Abu Dhabi.
