Trudeau Pledges Oil Sector Emissions Cuts

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to begin reducing carbon emissions from the oil and natural gas sector in 2025 in a climate election platform released ahead of the country’s federal elections on Sep. 20. Canada’s oil and gas industry needs to reduce emissions “at a pace and scale needed to achieve net-zero [emissions] by 2050, with five-year targets starting in 2025,” the Liberal party platform reads. The platform does not set a rate of reductions from the sector, however, nor does it establish a baseline for the five-year targets.
