HARRY LOCKWOOD, who died in September last year, started work at the Southampton Gaslight and Coke Company in January 1944 as a Junior Draughtsman. He progressed through a number of positions at the Southampton Gasworks, becoming Assistant Engineer in 1962. During the 1950s, the proximity of Southampton and Portsmouth to the Esso refinery at Fawley offered an ideal source of feedstocks for high temperature catalytic gasification of oil. New plant was installed first in Portsmouth, then in the Southampton works, and Harry was closely involved with this work.
