HAVING LEFT SCHOOL in 1948,Roy joined Round Oak Steelworks on its engineering training programme before starting a long career with British Gas at the Mond gasworks.He progressed as a design draughtsman there,specialising in furnaces and heating plant while at the same time attending night school,starting a family and gaining an HNC in Mechanical Engineering.He then moved to the West Midland Gas Industrial Department as a Chartered Engineer.As Assistant and then Chief Design Engineer,he was responsible for the design and evaluation of a wide range of process heating plant,in particular kiln design for the Staffordshire potteries.His team worked on several award-winning designs,including the’Trent’kiln and a continuous process flint calcination kiln.It was a busy time for gas engineers as businesses sought to move away from inefficient batch heating processes and to reap the benefits of newly available,cheaper natural gas.
