摘要

True design education happens when the student learns to use constraints and limitations as a spur to innovation. Charles Eames famously responded in a 1969 interview1 that "design depends largely on constraints," and designers have been nodding their agreement ever since. It's a wonderful statement, in part because it so sharply sets design apart from personal expression, but also because it's as true now as it was back then in the heyday of American Modernism. Unfortunately, finding a recent graduate of an American design program who gets its full meaning is far from easy.
