The US administration is risking legal war with California over a plan that could halt further gains to fuel economy standards within two years. Washington adopted regulations in 2012 that were intended to cut oil consump- tion by 2mn b/d by 2025 - doubling the efciency of cars and trucks to 54 miles/ USG (87km/USG). But President Donald Trump is sceptical of the rules, with his cabinet starting the process to repeal them.
