Cobble generation in a Hot Strip Mill (HSM) is an operational difficulty where slab which is being rolled get struck in the mill. It leads to loss of material, a huge processing delay resulting in decreasing mill utilization and mill productivity. One cobble in finishing mill stands leads to operational delay of about 45 minutes. The level of cobble at HSM, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) was high at about 0.46% of the total production during 2015-16. An investigation was carried out to find out the reasons for cobble generation. It was found that the side guide measurement system is inaccurate. A new modified side guide measurement has been designed and installed. Also signal analysis of various mill parameters was carried out to identify the unhealthy conditions. Based on the signal analysis using Support Vector Machines(SVM) technique a model has been developed to identify cobble in the mill. This has lead to the increase in mill utilisation from 72.19% to 76.13%, cobble generation decreased from 0.47% to 0.25%.
