Safety Effort Behind Schedule

The US Department of Transportation's pipeline safety division has fallen far behind in its goal of inspecting underground gas storage sites following a 2015 leak near Los Angeles, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said. Immediately after the methane plume at Southern California Gas' Aliso Canyon storage field, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) set a goal of inspecting all 400 underground storage facilities between 2018-23. The sites are scattered across 31 states, and PHMSA expected that 25 of those states would help conduct the inspections. But the GAO said that so far only 10 states have helped, and that PHMSA has not asked for more staff or funding for the task.
