Chinese steel exports hit 19-month high in March

China’s March steel exports surged to the highest level since June 2018 as Covid-19 shutdowns hit domestic demand. The increase ended a fve-month slide in exports. March exports rose by 2.3pc to 6.48mn t from 6.33mn t a year earlier, according to preliminary customs data. Exports were 209,000 t/d, the highest since April 2019, up by 61pc from 130,200 t/d in January-February when exports totalled 7.81mn t. China did not break out January and February cus- toms data separately this year to smooth out the efects of the extended lunar new year holiday and virus outbreak.
