Worker Training for HazCom 2012

You may have noticed that much has been said about the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) between the covers of Cbmpoundings, and some may feel inundated with the subject. Enough already! However, let's keep in mind that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) Hazard Communication Rule implementing the GHS standard (HazCom 2012) is an essential matter that impacts all (yes, all) companies that manufacture and use chemical products in the U.S. As mentioned in my Compoundings January 2013 (Vol. 63, No. 1) column, the impending compliance deadline for worker training on the new standard is December 1, 2013 (only months away); this is a mandatory requirement for the new product label elements and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) format. By June 1, 2016, companies should have modified their HazCom 2012 training and programs pursuant to applicable OSHA updates.
