PAINTED onto the cave walls of Lascaux in Dordogne in southern France is a colourful Palaeolithic tapestry featuring thousands of pictures of animals and people. Dating back 17,000 years, the paintings depict stags, cattle, horses and other animals, while the famous 'Hall of the Bulls' is dominated by the portraits of four aurochs - an extinct kind of black bull.
