Iraq Gets New US Sanctions Waiver to Buy Iranian Power

The US has granted Iraq another 90-day sanctions waiver to continue buying vital power supplies from Iran, but is keeping up the pressure on Baghdad to develop its energy independence and free itself from the “malign” influence of Washington’s arch-foe. The US State Department issued the temporary waiver on Tuesday, the third since the US imposed tough new sanctions on Iranian energy exports in November, as Washington weighs the competing priorities of isolating Tehran and not aggravating the chronic power outages in Iraq that fuelled major social unrest last summer.
