In relation to the Agenda article "Where is the place for clinical training" (PJ, 23 August 2008, p216), I would like to highlight two points. First, the "data" discussed looking at workload for preregistration trainees is unscientific and biased since it is reporting trainees' opinions only. There are no qualitative data on what the posts entailed, how much time is allocated to training and development, how experienced the tutor was etc. In my years of experience as a tutor, I have found that trainees often struggle with the conflicting demands on their time. This is a core area for their learning and it is extremely important for the trainee to be able to get to grips with, since as pharmacists we frequendy have many demands on our time and attention. The fact that the trainees find this difficult is a reflection of the high level to which they are expected to work, not a reflection on their training place. Also, trainees often do not realise how much learning is occurring from undertaking tasks.
