GAO: FDA's seafood HACCP program not sufficient to prevent illegal drug residues

FDA'S practice of reviewing documents from foreign processors and importers under its Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program is not enough to ensure that imported seafood is not laced with illegal drug residues, the Government Accountability Office says in a report released Monday. While the U.S. inspection program is limited to seafood HACCP procedures, the European Union relies on foreign government structures, food safety legislationand the foreign country's fish farm inspection program to ensure countries have equivalent safety programs, says GAO in its 51-page report, Seafood Safety: FDA Needs to Improve Oversight of Imported Seafood and Better Leverage Limited Resources (www.gao.govew. items/dI J286.pdj).
