FDA's Seafood HACCP regulation became effective on Dec. 18, 1997. During the first year of implementation, both the industry and FDA have had many challenges to face. The industry had to gear up for hazard analysis, writing and implementing a plan. The FDA needed to ensure that both industry and regulators were educated and needed to devise an enforcement strategy for the new rule. Data available to FDA show that the majority of seafood processors in the United States have written a HACCP plan. However, complete implementation of effective preventive controls mandated by the new regulation and efficient consistent oversight by the regulator is a goal for the future.
