Current status of motorcycle accidents based on national statistical data in Japan

This report introduces an analysis of national statistical accident data relating to motorcycle accidents in Japan. The data indicates that head injuries are the most frequent injuries of motorcycle riders in fatalities. In serious injuries, motorcycle accidents account for 31.7% of all serious accidents, and leg injuries of riders are most frequent (43.1%). In minor injuries, leg injuries are also the most frequent (47.2%). Additionally, a high rate of injured riders consist of inexperienced and/or young people. It is conjectured from the results that the head region of falalities and leg region of serious/minor injuries should be considered in relation to motorcycle rider protection, and safety education for inexperienced and/or young riders.
