Multislice CT was performed in 44 patients with colorectal carcinoma before surgery. Multiplanar reformation (MPR) images were analyzed to assess its value in evaluating a tumor invasion of colorectal carcinoma. MPR images had accuracies of 100%, 64%, 71% and 100% in staging of mp, ss, se and si. The accuracies, sensitivities and specificities in detection of local extension were 75%, 78% and 74%. The specificities were low compared with those in the past reports using conventional or helical CT with 1cm slice thickness, This result was caused by the over-staging to the pericolic inflammation or direct invasion to the mesocolon or epiploic appendix by high spatial resolution.
