Study on the amendment of standard regulations of food additives and contaminants for infant formulas in Korea.

The aim of this study was to propose suggestions for improving Korean regulatory standards for infant formula. Regulatory standards for food contaminants and additives in Korean infant formulas were compared with those in the Codex Alimentarius, the EU, Australia and New Zealand and analysed. Several suggestions for regulations were found from different countries. Firstly, it is proposed that additives for nutrient supplementation of infant formula be classified as types of nutrients. Secondly, that guidelines should be set on the max. content of additives in infant formula. Thirdly, the presence of pathogens, e.g. staphylococci and salmonellae, in infant formula should be regulated. Finally, regulations need to establish the max. permissible levels of some pesticides, Pb and Al, which are already regulated in other countries. These proposed recommendations would broaden the scope of infant formula regulatory standards needed for infant health.
