Infant formula and infant formula additives

Disclosed are infant formulas, infant formula additives, and pharmaceutical formulations that include active lactoferrin combined with antibodies which specifically bind IgA protease-like proteins or IgA protease precursor-like proteins. The formulas protect persons who drink the formulas or formulations from the pathogenic effects of bacteria and other infectious agents, e.g., viruses, which infect the upper respiratory tract.
