Social Media and Web 2.0 for the Perianesthesia Nurse

IN 2010, THE LANCET1 published a case report of a 6-year-old boy who refused to have his tonsil-lectomy scheduled for the following day after finding a graphic video of the procedure on YouTube. The health care community has been working to meet patient expectations and to respond to the explosive growth and capabilities of the Internet. The perianesthesia nurse is not immune to the constant evolution of the Internet, namely the growth of social media and the greater volumes of user-generated content. These digital tools have broad implications for all health care providers and as with any disruptive innovation, it takes time for policy, culture, practice, and attitudes to catch up. Nurses need to know both the patient's and provider's side of emerging technologies to best leverage these technologies to enhance professionalism and patient care.
