Enova Systems, Inc., a developer of electric vehicle power systems based in Torrance, California, showcased its electric vehicle technologies at the 2009 Plug-In Conference and Technology Exhibition in Long Beach, California, in August. A centerpiece was the Enova Ze, North America's first plug-in hybrid electric walk-in van. Engineered specifically for urban delivery routes and maintenance operations, the Ze plug-in step van drive system travels up to 150 miles per charge and can reach a top speed of 65 miles per hour. Operating costs are projected to be between $0.08 and $0.10 per mile, significantly less than the average of $0.24 to $0.48 per mile in a comparable diesel vehicle.
