Ureteric obstruction due to prostatic implantation in the sigmoid colon: a unique late complication of ureterosigmoidostomy.

Sir: Ureterosigmoidostomy was once a fashionable surgical method of preserving continence in patients requiring cystectomy. Due to problems with faecal incontinence and the increased risk of carcinoma in these patients, this operation fell out of favour and has been mostly replaced by ileal conduit urinary diversion. The complications of ureterosigmoidostomy include stenosis of the anastomosis, chronic infection, urolithiasis, electrolyte disturbances and an increased risk of colonic adenoma and adeno-carcinoma, typically at the uretero-colic anastomosis. Because of the potential neoplastic complications, endoscopic surveillance of these patients is recommended.
