During the modeling development of communication systems, the model must be well structured to quickly accommodate changes or upgrades in services, (application engine), protocols, hardware components, realtime software, scheduler, and call models. This paper elaborates details of the structure modeling approach: system description, verification and testing, performance evaluation, and system integration, using the example of a wireless switch subsystem. A structured approach achieves complete independence of the modeling blocks, enabling rapid and accurate incorporation of changes or upgrades of new services, architectures, software, operating system, and hardware. Block independence is achieved by the generic functional split incorporated in the system architure. Part of the approach is the open service design, which can be used for the functional and performance examination of the new emerging services. Structured modeling follows closely the software architecture, which enables the simulation code (with the addition of hardware drivers) to be directly downloaded as real-time software. Although a demonstrated example is taken from the wireless field, the approach is entirely generic and can be applied to the design of any real-time-based system.
