In vitro survival and proliferation of porcine primordial germ.

Primordial germ cells (PGC) were collected from the genital ridge of day 25 pig embryos and cultured on STO feeder cells in medium with leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF), LIF + stem cell factor (SCF) or LIF + SCF + basic fibroblast growth factor. Control cultures were not supplemented with growth factors. Freshly collected and cultured PGC showed alkaline phosphatase activity. The PGC survived and proliferated in culture for at least 5 days in the supplemented and control groups. None of the growthfactors increased in vitro growth of the PGC.
