Method for producing a culture of undifferentiated avian cells that express an embryonic stem cell phenotype that is capable of supporting an additional cell division, the method comprising: (a) collecting aviary gonadal cells comprising primary germ cells from an avian embryo after the formation of the primitive line, (b) deposit the avian gonadal cells in contact with a preconditioned feeding matrix comprising fibroblast cells, and (c) culturing the avian gonadal cells on the preconditioned feeding matrix in the presence of medium for a sufficient time to produce an avian cell culture consisting essentially of undifferentiated avian cells that express a phenotype of embryonic stem cells.
