摘要

Genistin and daidzin are among the major isoflavonoids in soybeans and soy products. In this study, effects of genistin and daidzin on pBR322 DNA cleavage induced by hydroxyl radicals, generated by UV photolysis of H2O2, were investigated in cell-free systems. In addition, scavenging capacity of genistin and daidzin on superoxide anion (O2-) and growth inhibitory activity of genistin and daidzin against a human melanoma cell line (M14) were examined. The isoflavones protected against DNA damage and showed a superoxide dismutase-like effect. Nevertheless, only genistin significantly decreased the vitality of M14 cells, confirming the importance of the 5,7-dihydroxy structure in the A ring in anticarcinogenic effects. Results indicate that genistin, due to its antioxidant activity and anticarcinogenic properties, contributes to the overall biological activity of soy.
