Effect of Tephrosia Purpurea Powder Against Arsenic Induced Toxicity in Rats

This work has been conducted to evaluate the effect of powder of Tephrosia purpurea (TP) on arsenic induced toxicity. Twenty four wistar albino rats divided into group I as control; Sodium arsenite (lOmg/kg) was orally given to group II, additionallygroup III was orally treated with TP powder (500mg/kg).Oral administration of NaAs02for 28 days resulted in a significant decrease in Hb%, TEC and TLC, significant increase of AST, ALT, ALP, BUN and creatinineand arsenic accumulation in tissues.Treatmentwith TP powder @ 500 mg/ kg significantly decreased the elevated ALP and BUN levels, restored altered haematological levelsas compared to arsenic treated group with no significant difference in arsenic concentration in tissues when compared with group II.The study concludes that supplementation of powder of Tephrosia purpurea daily P.O for 28 days has provided mild protection against arsenic induced toxicity.
