Breakthrough last month at Raingruben rail tunnel, in Austria, saw Strabag complete the main excavation work on the Perschling project for the track arm of the national rail authority, OBB Infrastruktur Bau.rnThe 12.98m diameter Herrenknecht single shield (S-319) completed the 2,120m drive on 11 March after being launched in late May last year. In total, the Raingruben tunnel will be more than 2,730m long, including a 408m long covered section between bored piles.rnStrabag is working on Lot 3 of the 42.3Km long railway line thatrnOBB is building in east Austria between Vienna and St Polten. Work began in 2005 and is scheduled for completion this year. Design work for the client was done by ILF Consulting Engineers.rnThe 13km long Perschling stretch includes three tunnels -Raingruben, which is farthest west, and the Stierschweiffeld and Reiserberg tubes which are located in the middle and west of the project section, respectively. Just over half of Lot 3 is built in bored and covered tunnel. The tunnels will carry twin rail tracks.rnGeology along the alignment comprises marl, siltstone andrnsandstone. The TBM has maximum cuttemead torque of 13,500kNm and 17" discs. The bore, which has an excavated diameter of 13.03m, is lined with 1.8m long concrete segmental rings (5+1) of generally 300mm thickness, and a final concrete lining of 300mm thickness.
