A powerful and systematic simulation methodology for Reed-Solomon encoder/decoder systems is presented. The basic encoding and decoding procedures are most easily described at a very high level using computer algebra tools to describe the requisite mathematical operations over a finite field. We illustrate that the Mathematica programming language provides an appropriate set of constructs for modeling the various linear algebraic algorithms that are required to implement the encoding and decoding steps. This level of description corresponds to a form of high-level system modeling. The design and simulation process for a particular Reed-Solomon code is given as an example of this methodology.
