In a revealing new study, San Diego Gas & Electric Co. last week said tests showed plug-in hybrid electric vehicles get 60 percent better gasoline mileage than currently available hybrid vehicles and have 37 percent lower carbon dioxide tailpipe emissions.rnThe study by SDG&E, a regulated utility affiliate of Sempra Energy, evaluated the performance of two 2007-model standard hybrid vehicles for six months, and then converted them into plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) using a lithium-ion battery conversion kit for another six months of study.rnIn addition to performing much better on gas mileage and carbon dioxide emissions, the PHEVs had 18 percent lower fuel costs, the study concluded.
