LG A attacks retailers over food waste

The use of 'buy one get one free' deals by supermarkets is partly to blame for councils' growing waste bills, according to the Local Government Association (LGA). The body calculates wasted food and drink costs consumers £i3.7bn a year, including the original cost of buying the products and of paying for its disposal. Clyde Loakes, the LGA's environment board vice chairman, said the average family in England spent £520 last year on food and drink which was not eaten.
