There are relatively few winning school projects in the awards this year. Hawkins/ Brown's simple, light-filled swimming pool is, surprisingly, the only scheme from the independent sector, which has seen such a frenzy of building recently.In the state sector, there has been a dearth of investment in new schools. The building of schools with the scale of ambition of Boroughmuir High School by Allan Murray Architects is largely confined to Wales and Scotland. Projects like the cleverly terraced Marlborough PrimarySchool by Dixon Jones, a replacement for a Victorian school, are the exception in England, where we have seen instead a wealth of extensions to existing schools. The fine MaccreanorLavington one here is just the tip of the iceberg. Practices such as Haverstock, Walters & Cohen and Cottrell & Vermeulen, working imaginatively with small palettes and tight budgets, are making this a quietly but richly inventive sector at the moment, and one not fully reflected in RIBA awards this year.
