Built to Brew: The History and Heritage of the Brewery

Beer, breweries and pubs are all dear to the British consciousness (and quite right too!). Back in the 1960s and '70s we worried about the domination of the 'Big Six' -Watney Mann, Scottish & Newcastle, Courage and the like - and their apparent desire to do away with traditional cask conditioned beer and the loss of old-established breweries. In the mid-1970s they brewed 70 per cent of our beer and controlled half our pubs. Forty years on it may come as a very sobering thought that 90 to 95 percent of beer consumed in this country is brewed by multi-national corporations, none of them British-owned.
