GPS jamming can compromise vessel safety and situational awareness - and incidents are on the rise, according to NovAtel, a part of global tech group Hexagon. "The main source of jamming is suspected to be military-based," David Russell, marine segment manager for Hexagon's autonomy and positioning division, tells Ship & Boat International. "Jamming tends to occur close to areas of conflict…we've seen jamming incidents closer to shore but these could be caused by unintentional sources: it's difficult to know who is causing the jamming."
